Timing is important when it comes to running a business.
And the timing couldn’t have been better for Teri-Lynn and Russ Harlick, owners of Frick’s Fish & Chips, as the popular Chatham restaurant prepares to move to a larger location that will now allow customers to dine in.
Teri-Lynn Harlick said the lease was set to expire at the current location at the corner of Park Avenue and Queen Street, where the business has operated for nearly 50 years, so she decided to call her long-time friend Fred Naclerio to see what he had available.
The owner of Apollo Property Management told her that he was getting ready to lease the former Kentucky Fried Chicken store on Queen Street and offered it to her.
“He gave me a smoking deal (on a lease),” Harlick said, adding Naclerio is also going to rejuvenate the building.
“I’m really thrilled,” she said, adding there has been a positive response to her social media posts about it.
“It’s going to be great,” said employee Jackie Whittington, adding the extra parking is going to be a bonus.
The current, tiny location, has a few tables, but was not suited for eat-in business.
That will change with the new location, which will keep the tables and chairs from the former KFC business.
“Our customers are quite excited about it,” Whittington said.
Harlick said the new location will come with some changes to the menu, including healthier food choices.
She said they are still deciding on whether to offer a baked or broiled fish in addition to their popular deep-fried choices. She added there will also be a green salad available.
Harlick said the business also plans to offer lunch specials that will appeal to students, including a boneless chicken meal.
Since purchasing Frick’s Fish & Chips nearly seven years ago, she said business has tripled and this move is expected to boost it again.
Harlick attributes the success to the dedicated employees and loyal customers.
She said the move also means more hiring will take place.
The current location will close on Feb. 16 with plans to open the new location in early March, Harlick said.
