The Thames Art Gallery in Chatham will be celebrating the contributions of black Canadians with three events during Black History Month.
The gallery will screen a National Film Board movie called Sisters in the Struggle at the Kiwanis Theatre on Feb. 15. The 49-minute film, directed by Dionne Brand and Ginny Stikeman uses the NFB documentary style with talking heads and verite-style shots, according to a news release.
“Despite the conventional form, the film remains radical in its amplifications of the voices of black Canadian women, who reflect on the legacy of the intersection of racism and sexism, alongside their personal battles in community, labour and feminist organizing,” the release said.
Concessions will be available before and after the film.
On Family Day – Feb. 18 – the gallery will be host to a poster-making workshop. Inspired by Viola Desmond – who stood up against racial discrimination at a movie theatre in Nova Scotia in 1946 – the participants will “take creative action” by creating posters related to an issue they care about.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Studio One at the gallery.
TAG will feature Jamaican-Canadian artist Michael Chambers on Feb. 21 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. He will launch Shadows to Silver, his book which documents his retrospective exhibition.
Chambers’ work, which focused on “diverse representations of the black body,” showed at the gallery last summer, the release stated. He will also discuss his photographic career with the audience.
All events will be free to the public.
