An unemployed man who was found in possession of $200 worth of marijuana during a traffic stop must pay the court $1,500 in two months.
If Akeem Amal Padmore, of Henley Land, St John fails to pay the fine imposed by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant within the stipulated time he will spend two months in prison.
Police stopped Padmore yesterday on the Barrow section of the ABC Highway after he was seen driving his car without a seat belt. He was charged for that offence and also fined $300, which must be paid by next Tuesday if he wants to avoid spending a week in prison.
While police were speaking to him they experienced a strong scent of cannabis coming from the vehicle. Padmore was told that he was suspected to be in possession of the illegal drug and a search was requested. He consented.
The illicit substance, which weighed 40 grammes was found in a jar inside a bag which was on the passenger side of the vehicle.
