Community economic development workshop coming to C-K

Chatham-Kent’s economic development department will partner with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for a free Community Economic Development 101 workshop next month.

The interactive event will take place in Chatham on April 17 at the Retro Suites from 9 a.m. to noon.

It is focused on helping community leaders, local business owners and volunteer agencies deepen their understanding of community economic development. Attendees will learn the basics as well as practical tools to help develop and implement a local strategy.

The workshop will aim to build on existing networks and community champions. Participants will examine three key components of community economic development:

– Economic wealth generators in the community and how to attract more; – Economic loss and how to stop it; – Supporting activities and associations in the community and how to connect with them.

The goal is to foster an environment that results in the “creation of wealth and well-being for the benefit of the entire community,” stated the economic development department in a release, adding that solutions must be rooted in local knowledge, skills, and resources, and led by community members.

“Economic development is not something that can be done in isolation, but rather requires an entire community approach,” said Stuart McFadden, director of economic development.

“We are looking forward to working with OMAFRA and our local partners to help further enhance our community economic development strategies.”
