New docs announced for CKHA

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance has a few new faces in its emergency department, with the addition of three physicians to the hospital.

Dr. David Bastien and Dr. Queenette Asuquo join the team as emergency medicine physicians, while Dr. Osagie Igbinoba joins the hospitalist and emergency departments.

“Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is pleased to welcome doctors Bastien, Asuquo and Igbinoba to our organization,” said Dr. Pervez Faruqi, CKHA chief of staff, in a release.

“We are thrilled they have chosen to join us in our emergency and hospitalist departments. Their knowledge, skill and expertise will be great additions to these clinical teams.”

After growing up in Windsor, Bastien worked at Ford Motor Company as a tool and die maker.

Being laid off in 2004, he started volunteering in the Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare emergency room and with aspirations of attending university, he pursued the necessary prerequisites and went on to the University of Windsor to complete a bachelor of science, honours and earned a master of business administration at the Odette School of Business.

Bastien then finished his doctor of medicine at the University of Toronto in 2016 and his family medicine residency with a focus on emergency medicine at Western University in London in 2018.

He completed his residency rotations at South Bruce Grey Health Centre and Middlesex General Hospital.

“My first experience at CKHA was as a family member when my father received care here. I was impressed with the service he received and he’s always spoke highly of his experiences at the hospital since,” Bastien said.

“I have also enjoyed the congeniality of smaller communities during my training as a resident physician. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of Chatham-Kent convinced me that CKHA will be a great choice.”

Asuquo received her bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery from the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria in 1998. She then continued her training as a registrar physician in emergency medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery and urology at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

She moved to Ireland where she completed postgraduate training in emergency medicine and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland in 2007. Asuquo completed a master of science in sports and exercise medicine as a subspecialty area in emergency medicine from the National University of Ireland Galway in 2011.

Most recently, she held the position of emergency medicine physician at Cape Breton Regional Hospital since June 2013.

She also teaches as an advanced trauma life support instructor across Canada and the United States.

“I am looking forward to joining the team in CKHA’s emergency department and the opportunity to use my skill set in providing high-quality patient care,” Asuquo said. “The community of Chatham-Kent will be a great place to reside and raise my young family as well. I have felt welcomed from the start and look forward to settling into the community.”

Igbinoba received his bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin City, Nigeria in 2001.

He spent his early career as a medical officer at Zungeru Hospital and Ufor Hospital in Nigeria and at Port of Spain General Hospital in Trinidad and Tobago.

After moving to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2014, Igbinoba completed the clinical skills assessment and training program with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador and received his licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada.

In 2018, he became certified with the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Igbinoba has most recently held the role of family physician at Labrador West Health Centre in Labrador City, working in emergency medicine and facilitating regular family practice clinics.
