Chatham-Kent police recover items stolen from cemetery

Chatham-Kent police have recovered several brass items stolen from Maple Leaf Cemetery in Chatham – including many from grave sites – and are trying to ensure they are returned to families.

Police said several complaints regarding the theft of brass vases and plaques from the cemetery were received during the past month from Chatham-Kent cemetery operations staff.

Through investigation, police said a suspect was identified as being responsible for two of the thefts and has been charged.

Police continue to investigate the other thefts. Anyone with information is asked to contact Const. Mark VanderGreindt at markvan@chatham-kent.ca or 519-436-6600 ext. 293.

All the recovered items have been returned to the cemetery operations office. Police said if someone had something stolen from the grave site of a loved one at Maple Leaf Cemetery, they can call 519-360-1998 in order to identify the missing items.

Police and the cemetery operations office are working together to ensure these items are returned to their rightful place.

Uttering threats

A 52-year-old Chatham man has been charged with uttering threats after Chatham-Kent police responded to a disturbance outside his residence on Queen Street early Sunday morning.

Police said the charge was laid in connection to an incident with the man’s neighbour.

The accused was released with an April 23 court date.

Assault charge

A 38-year-old man is facing charges in connection to a domestic disturbance at a Chatham residence Sunday night.

Chatham-Kent police said, through investigation, the accused was arrested and charged with assault and forcible confinement.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Weekend break-ins

Chatham-Kent police are investigating two separate break and enters over the weekend.

Officers were called to a Chatham residence at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday regarding a break and enter after the homeowner awoke to find two men inside his home attempting to steal electronics.

The men fled when the homeowner confronted them.

Through investigation, police identified, located and arrested two suspects.

A 46-year-old Chatham man was charged with break and enter and released with a court date.

A 32-year-old Chatham man was charged with break and enter and failing to comply with conditions. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Two men were arrested after police responded to an alarm at a business in Chatham just before 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Officers located a hole in the fenced compound when arriving and found two suspects inside the business.

They were arrested and taken to police headquarters.

A 39-year-old Blenheim man and 49-year-old Chatham man were charged with break and enter. They were released with a court date.
