The first Ken Houston Memorial Scholarship Award has been announced.
Family and friends of the late NHL player, who was from Dresden, have formed a committee, raised funds and are now ready to award a $1,000 scholarship to local high school graduates who spent their formative years in the Dresden Minor Hockey system and are moving on to the next level of education, a media release from the committee stated.
The successful candidate will show a passion for hockey and be driven by a strong work ethic.
“He or she will have a solid moral compass and will be a leader on and off the ice,” the committee said. “This person will enjoy the social aspects that life has to offer and be a community-minded person and shows the spirit of giving back.
“The scholarship recipient will have a strong respect for their peers, and will also have a strong respect for coaches and teachers while earning that same respect back.”
Those interested in applying for the scholarship can email a 500-word essay on why they believe they should receive the scholarship, plus two references, to Dave Cameron at acecam5@hotmail.com.
Houston, a former Atlanta and Calgary Flame, died March 10, 2018, at age 64.
