Soca music will rise

Legendary Trinidadian soca artiste Superblue is optimistic about the future of soca in the international arena.

Superblue whose career skyrocketed in 1980 with Soca Baptist was speaking to Bajan Vibes backstage of Rise: Soca Kingdom. Having gained global recognition for his single Fantastic Friday, the 62-year-old veteran who is currently headlining the Soca Kingdom world tour with Machel Montano indicated that it was “only a matter of time” before the genre broke records.

“The technology is here, and the knowledge is coming along. It is just a matter of time. There [are] little boulders and barriers but we [the soca artistes of the region] will burst that,” he said, acknowledging that it will be a tough competition for the Caribbean artistes.

“Everybody else [is] trying to get into the market too so we’re [not] going to get in just so, but we have good music,” he further added.

Superblue contended that soca is capable of being fused with any genre and Caribbean people have a distinct, unique sound and rhythm that is incomparable.

“Soca music can infiltrate any music in the world. It is the only music riddim that you can put all the ingredients [into]... we the islands, the Caribbean can facilitate it because we have riddim,” the calypsonian commented.

He stated that through trial and error the younger generation of soca artistes will be able to enhance and further develop their craft.

“[Soca] is coming good and everybody is doing their bit, [but] Rome wasn’t built in a day and it is spreading like a wildfire which I am thankful for,” Superblue continued.

With Trinidad carnival right around the corner in six months, Superblue told fans they could anticipate his 2019 Trinidad Carnival release.

“I coming nice and I coming to put my best foot forward,” he told Bajan Vibes.
