Laprise loses in first round
TORONTO – Welterweight Dhiego Lima (15-7-0) knocked out Chatham’s Chad (The Disciple) Laprise (14-4-0) with a left hook to the chin at 1:37 of the first round Saturday at UFC 231 at Scotiabank Arena.
The savage one-punch KO ended a four-fight losing streak in the UFC for the American-based Brazilian, who walked away with his arms raised after felling his foe.
Laprise appeared wobbly as he made his way from the octagon to the fighters’ room.

Carleton sets career-high
AMES, Iowa – Bridget Carleton of Chatham scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the Iowa State Cyclones’ 87-35 win over North Dakota in NCAA basketball Sunday.
Carleton also had a career-high seven steals, seven rebounds and two assists. She was 3-of-5 on three-pointers.
Iowa State (7-2) will host No. 21 Drake (8-2) this Sunday.
UCC wrestlers win gold
TILLSONBURG – The Ursuline Lancers won six medals – three gold and three silver – at the Gemini Invitational wrestling tournament Friday.
Kayla Smith, Daniel Crummer and Khun-Dte Jung won gold.
Vanessa Devolder, Ben Parent and Zach Parent won silver.
Ryan Geniole and Victoria Armstrong posted top-six results.
Lancers lose semifinal
AMHERSTBURG – The Ursuline Lancers lost to LaSalle Sandwich 25-19, 21-25, 15-11 in a semifinal at the General Amherst senior girls’ volleyball tournament Saturday.
The Lancers placed second in their pool and were 2-1-3 overall in six matches.
They swept Korah Collegiate and Windsor Massey, and split with Tecumseh Vista, LaSalle Villanova and General Amherst.
