Confusion over new animal shelter name

A local animal rescue group says there’s been some confusion about the new shelter under construction in Chatham.

CK Animal Rescue, which isn’t affiliated with the Chatham-Kent Animal Shelter, hopes that consideration will be given to changing the new facility’s name.

Renee Geniole, a spokesperson for the rescue, said the group has concerns about the shelter’s name, which was presented to council last week.

She said there have been a number of situations where people have contacted the rescue thinking they were donating to the shelter.

“Somebody sent in a cheque that was for the shelter, but it was made out to CK Animal Rescue,” Geniole said.

She added that other people have mistakenly asked them how the new building is coming along.

“I know it’s only the name of the building, and I get that, but I think that’s how people will start to refer to it,” she said.

Geniole said the group has been lobbying councillors for a name change and believes the community would be “more than happy” to provide suggestions for a different moniker.

“Hopefully, we can come to a resolution,” she said. “We haven’t really had much feedback yet from any of the council members, but I’m sure we will.”

However, Chatham Coun. Marjorie Crew, co-chair of the Friends of the New Animal Shelter campaign, said she believes the shelter name is appropriate.

She said the original idea was to name the shelter after a large donor, but that $250,000 sponsor didn’t materialize.

“The money was raised by the citizens of Chatham-Kent and Chatham-Kent council,” she said. “It was a community effort, so it made sense. It’s going to be a municipal building.”

When asked if another name was possible, Crew said she wasn’t sure what else the shelter could be called.

“It’s a shelter. There’s a name difference. They’re a rescue. They do good work and no one’s trying to take anything away from them,” she said. “It wasn’t something that we did maliciously.”

She also said the facility is still on track to open this spring, but noted there isn’t a specific date just yet.
